Human dignity as the first constraint on design.
DIGNUM starts from a conviction about the status of personal data: the data a person generates, and the data inferred about that person, are emanations of that person and carry their rights attached. A concrete normative requirement follows from this, and from that requirement an engineering obligation. The algorithmic era has reorganised everyday life —health, education, work, credit, public deliberation— around infrastructures that continuously record, infer and decide, while the rules governing those infrastructures were settled in a bilateral negotiation between regulators and platforms from which citizens were excluded. That is the social contract that was never signed, and writing it is the work of this initiative. DIGNUM contrasts DatAIsm —the extractive paradigm that reduces the person to a data point and optimises for prediction and control— with HumAIsm, which returns agency, control and dividends to whoever generates the data. It places human dignity as the first constraint on every technical, legal, economic and political design, operative from the first line of code and the first clause of the contract. And it imposes on itself a discipline that orders its whole portfolio: every principle must descend to an operational specification, an auditable metric and an artefact verifiable by third parties. Nothing is ethical if it cannot be verified.
This conviction comes from the humanist tradition that defines the academic identity of Comillas, and it projects onto the algorithmic era as a programme of work: a Dignity of Data Index that measures empirically the extent to which a product, a process or a regulation respects personal sovereignty over data; a body of design by dignity principles; and the articulated proposal of a new digital social contract between citizens, public administration and technological actors.
Sovereignty
Effective control over data: personal data store, granular consent, cryptographic traceability and enforceable revocation.
Verifiability
Normative principle → operational specification → auditable metric → artefact a third party can check.
Interdisciplinarity
No proposal is approved unless it involves at least two faculties with substantive responsibility in design and execution.
Independence
Simultaneous engagement with academia, regulator and industry, without becoming the contractor of any of the three.
Applied humanism
Humanism proves itself by fixing verifiable design constraints, rather than through restorative nostalgia or technocratic delegation.
Democratic deliberation
Citizens are a counterparty to the digital social contract, with instruments that restore their deliberative capacity.
Transparency
Public traceability of the chain data → model → evaluation → decision → civil audit, with every link signed.
Self-audit
DIGNUM states, publishes and audits these values: it translates them into internal indicators reviewed annually across its portfolio.
Data governance is a hybrid problem. Purely engineering work produces tools without legitimacy; purely legal work, norms without implementation; purely philosophical work, discourse without traction. DIGNUM is built on the discipline of keeping the four perspectives operating at once.
ICAI contributes the design and audit of artificial intelligence systems, together with privacy and digital sovereignty engineering. The Faculty of Law articulates the status of data as a fundamental right, the constitutional architecture of consent and algorithmic liability. The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration examines market dynamics, the concentration of informational power and the competitive distortions of data asymmetry. The Faculty of Human and Social Sciences anchors the edifice in philosophy, anthropology, public theology and political theory.
Five research lines articulated by a common thesis.
The governance of data and of artificial intelligence becomes operative when normative commitments are translated into verifiable artefacts, and when engineering artefacts are designed with those commitments as first-class constraints. Each line combines a normative axis and an engineering axis, and unfolds into research proposals with an explicit question, methods and expected output.
The programme rejects three recurrent asymmetries of the contemporary debate. The one that separates ethical discourse from technical design and produces principles without traction. The one that reduces governance to bare regulatory compliance and ignores the anthropological question about the kind of person the algorithmic era produces. And the one that delegates the democratic legitimacy of the digital order to the negotiation between regulator and platform, leaving citizens as the passive object of a contract to which they were never a party.
The seventeen proposals that follow constitute a first wave. The initiative is open to iterating them with members of the four faculties involved and with external collaborators, and it reviews the portfolio annually in the light of progress and of European and international regulatory developments.

Personal Data as a Human Right: A New Social Contract Based on Data Sovereignty, Human Dignity and Data Personalism
In an era of ubiquitous data collection, platform dominance and AI-mediated governance, the implicit social contract of digital life is shaped by a small number of private actors rather than by democratic deliberation. The paper proposes a dignity-centred digital social contract grounded in data sovereignty and data personalism: the thesis that personal data are rights-bearing emanations of the person and must be protected, in substance, as a human right. It contrasts DatAIsm —the extractive paradigm that reduces people to data points and optimises for prediction and control— with HumAIsm, which re-centres the human subject and the irreducibility of dignity to calculation, and it articulates an operative governance architecture across six dimensions: technological design and oversight through Dignity-by-Design, limits to automation and meaningful human control, contextual valuation and redistribution, political and institutional legitimacy, sociocultural cohesion and the digital commons, and legal and regulatory safeguards.
